Founded in 1993 as a spin-off from Kent State University’s Liquid Crystal Institute, Kent Displays initially focused on developing advanced liquid crystal technologies for various applications. During this research, Kent Displays’ scientists discovered the potential of cholesteric liquid crystal (ChLCD) technology, a display material that can hold an image without continuous power.

Building on this breakthrough, the company began exploring ways to apply the technology to everyday writing. The goal was to create a digital writing surface that felt as natural as pen and paper while reducing paper waste. After years of research and development, Kent Displays introduced the first Boogie Board LCD Writing Tablet in 2010. Today, Boogie Board tablets are sold through Buffalo Games after its acquisition of the brand in 2025. Kent Displays launched the Noteorius Smart Notebook, another paperless writing device, later the same year.
